ENCAUSTIC :meaning ‘to burn in’ dates back to the 5th century BC. Contemporary artists are finding new ways to work with this molten bees wax mixture. All classparticipants will learn the basics on how to make the encaustic medium, adding color pigment, fusing and supplies.

Beginning and Beyond: Workshops 10-4pm Explore the melted wax and color through painting, layering, collage, and textural applications, which include masking, scrapping and embedding found objects. Drawing techniques using etched lines with graphite or incising with wax or pigment sticks.
Beyond: Photo Xerox image transfers on silk tissue: The World of Wax Resist on Aqaba paper: Let me know if you are interested in drawing designs with the tjanting tool and dipping papers in colored dyes. Similar to the tie-dying technique, creates wonderful resources for collage on encaustic boards. Mono Printing: Drawing and painting on a heated plate with encaustic pigment bars, brushes or tjanting tools.
3D_Sculpting and Layering Offered to artists that have explored the wonderful versatility of the beeswax medium and got ‘hooked’. Here is your opportunity to try techniques, both 2D and 3D, to create new forms and surfaces that will be applicable to any medium you are comfortable with: clay, molds and pouring wax slabs for sculpting. Also techniques in etching, painting, collage and embedding found objects. Diane Kleiss Acquired a BFA - an Art Education K-12 Degree - an Art History minor from UMD at Duluth, Minnesota. 15 yrs were spent teaching both public school and private classes in MN and AZ. Moving to Tucson in 1994 she also taught art for community art groups, including The Drawing Studio and the Art Museum. She has conducted classes in painting and sculpture in her studio and monitored critique groups for eight years that shared ideas and encouragement. Diane is a practicing multimedia artist and has had work exhibited in many state and national juried and solo exhibits. She is a member of several art organizations and currently a board member for the SCAA, Silver City Arts Association in New Mexico.
